‘TRANSBAND’-Railway station and public hub The conceptual design is a proposal for redesigning Santacruz railway station, Mumbai, India. With over 5 million people commuting every day, railways are the most vital of Mumbai’s transportation systems. Railway stations are the hub from where people begin, convey or end their journeys. Hence, their design calls for not just efficiency and functionality but also for an architectural uniqueness that would make them standout as landmarks in space and time. DESIGN CONCEPT AND STRATEGY Seemingly avoiding an obstruction, bands of steel and glass give way to fluid curves that run along the entire stretch of the Santacruz railway station forming its structure. Besides bringing in ample natural light and a feeling of openness to its interiors, these bands aim to express a sense of movement, pace and dynamism which the trains have been symbols to. Thus, the idea for the design concept was to create a strong playful presence even in the thick of the morbid Mumbai hustle. The design is also an attempt to make the station more than just a place for boarding trains. Features such as green zones (Public Square) and retail are but ways to make the station a part of the people and its community. Also, the redesigned bus depot, taxi pickup points etc. connect the railway station to the motorway outside.
