In the process of urban development in Taiwan, the arcades commonly seen in Southern China and Southeast Asia are regulated as space subject to legal norms in architectural design in response to the local climate requirements, such as intensive sunshine and northwest rain. Although arcades are part of the public space, the actual property right belongs to private individuals. Under such precondition, arcades have become a field of the initiation of overlap and competition of power between the commercial and residential due to their utility demands. In this study, the historical evolution and problematique concerning arcades in Taiwan are briefly articulated at the outset, and the concept of event issued from power and field in arcades and its relative theories are explored subsequently. According to three diverse angles - public and private, power and competition, and consumption and boundary – arcades are re-interpreted and a new prototype of Commercial/Residential Complex is proposed in subsequent thesis design.
