【作品介紹 Description】

The site for Doshisya Kyotanabe Chapel, housing the Chapel and Niijima Jo Exhibition space, is separated by campus passageway into 2 sites. The required programs physically take up both sites. How can we design 1 building on 2 sites – philosophically and visually – rather than 2 buildings on 2 sites? Niijima Jo traveled across Pacific Ocean to US in 1865 despite Japan national ban of overseas travel, and encountered Christianity (Protestant); he founded Doshisya University in 1875 to educate Japanese youth with Christian values. We represented Pacific Ocean with water feature “Niijima Jo’s Ocean” spanning across campus passageway to the 2 sites, then located the Chapel (“Christianity value”) and Exhibition Space (“Liberalism”) next to Niijima Jo’s Ocean facing each other. Christianity value and Liberalism are the founding spirit of Doshisya, locating them at opposite sides of Niijima Joe’s Ocean symbolizes Niijima Jo’s journey. Students walk between Niijima Jo’s Ocean everyday should naturally perceive this founding spirit. Externally by offsetting buildings volumes, we visually included the campus passageway as part of design. Internally, placing large clear openings only at the short elevations, we deliberately directed visual connection only to the opposite building, eliminating any openings to longitudinal building elevations to make the rooms at the 2 sites feel closer. We further enhanced this connection by continuing steel columns at 2.6 meter spacing from one building to the next. We set out on a journey to find meaning that is unique to Doshisya of the separated sites, then enhanced that meaning with our design. By designing the buildings with visual integrity from outside and within, we have achieved 1 building on 2 separate sites.
