“Floating” was a temporal architecture exhibited in the TFAM plaza which lasted for three months. The plaza is situated on the edge of urban area and adjacent to the riverbank on its north side, causing frequent wind across the plaza. Due to the unbearable strong wind and the subtropical sunlight, visitors to the museum hurry inside the building for most of the time, leaving the plaza a place lacking vitality. In response to the natural feature of the site, the concept of “Floating” was derived from the specific attributes of wind and light. A kite-canopy and a curved island were joined and interlinked from above and below, in order to create a pavilion that floats on the plaza, capturing the breeze and light. Therefore a new way of perceiving the environments was suggested by revealing the interactions between the kites and the nature; moreover, the plaza became a place where visitors were attracted and engaged, being provided intimacy and publicity at the same time. The kite canopy was consisted of 320 box-shaped kites. The unique presence of wind was enhanced by the swaying motion of these kites, encouraging a sense of relaxation for the place. The kites also performed as an interface that transformed the sunlight, depicting diverse faces of light and shade, while the light went through across different time of the day. Beneath the canopy is a curved island ascending to the centre of the pavilion. Visitors approached out of curiosity, meandering within the pavilion, laying under the shades, or sliding down from the curved slopes. A pink spherical void within the island could be discovered if visitors wandering towards the centre. When entering into it, a unique sound effect was revealed by the spherical space, in which the natural elements were interweaved together, leading visitors’ perception into a sense of serenity.
