The TNH Center is the regular experimental program of the Taipei New Horizon Building. Each year, the Center seeks to evoke culture awakening through a everyday object in the face of the global trend of homogeneity to find one’s own cultural identity and identity acknowledgement. The inaugural TNC Center was based on the theme of “Traditional Chinese Typeface” presented in a physical exhibition, which wrapped up successfully in 2016. The 2017 TNH Center had overcome the limitations of physical space, extended the concept of “communication node of all things,” selected “rice” as the annual theme, elected “media” as the medium, and invited seven media outlets from both sides of the Taiwan Strait and Hong Kong to participate in a cross-cultural dialogue centered on this shared diet from different perspectives. The planning of the project series spanned over a year, reflecting the seasonal evolutions of rice. The “Rice Granary Project’s” transformation from an abstract concept to a physical exhibit is the phasic outcome of the 2017 TNH Center. The 'Rice Granary Project ' recreated the food culture scene of Taiwan with traditional dining tables, displaying the individual perspectives of each of the seven media outlets. In addition to inviting the advocates of Taiwan’s rice culture, the project team collaborated with Beitou Agricultural Association’s Rice Class to transplant a second-phase rice field to the exhibition space, to comprehensively convey the annual theme of “rice.” Architecture students were also invited to participate in a workshop to simulate and construct an urban terraced field with recyclable wooden pallets for easy and efficient assembly as the main material for the space. It not only mirrors the concept of Toyo Ito in his design of Taipei New Horizon Building’s exterior, but also compiles the urbanite yearning for rice fields, land, and nature, enabling the exhibit to extend beyond a unidirectional information transmission to a collective memory composed of interactive communication.
