“Rainbow in the Darkness” is an outdoor site-specific interactive installation. The work began with the concept of “scars” which everyone had, therefore the act of writing together by people is the key element of this work. The work welcomes the public in daytime and the private messages on it are shown through the light in the night. The artist aims to initiate a dialogue with the public through the installation of a black matrix in the middle of the plaza. In the daytime, visitors can leave words or images by removing the black paint from the surface of the installation with a sharp thing; at nighttime, the LEDs within the installation emit rainbow-color light that shines through these inscriptions.Private writings become part of the work and make “Rainbow in the Darkness” a carrier for collective memories. The work combines both internal living experience of everyone and the characteristic of plaza as an open space. It is also in response to social issues by touring to different cities, LGBTQ in Taipei and disasters in Roppongi, Tokyo. The installation, public participation, time and space construct the whole meaning of the work which deliver the message to face the pain and difficulties together and bravely. Eventually it will become a record of the era.
