【 Description|
Rooted in Daren Township, Taitung, the Tjuabar Village Community Center is a contemporary reinterpretation of Paiwan cultural heritage—an architecture of resilience, adaptability, and belonging. Designed for seismic and typhoon resilience, it uses sculpted concrete, perforated brick, bamboo panels, and slate to balance durability with local expression. Spatial flexibility enables the building to evolve with the community’s needs, from youth outmigration to aging populations.
Totemic motifs—such as the hundred-pacer snake, glass beads, and pottery—are abstracted into curved circulation, rhythmic perforations, and layered façades, embedding ancestral memory in contemporary form. Passive cooling, semi-outdoor corridors, and natural ventilation respond to the subtropical climate while minimizing energy demand.
More than a building, the center is a cultural platform—offering plazas and platforms for storytelling, festivals, and everyday life. It integrates Indigenous craftsmanship into civic life, creating a replicable model where tradition, environment, and modern Indigenous identity converge.
