SAMA Square is a modular urban commercial prototype in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, addressing real-world needs for scalable market, retail, and community spaces. It introduces a “club sandwich” planning model—layering commercial and public zones to optimize land use and support adaptability in dense urban environments. Its modular stall system and linear configuration simplify construction, reduce time, cost, and boost scalability and market viability.
The design responds to social needs like urban disconnection and generational segregation by fostering interaction, micro-enterprise, and cultural activation. Cross-domain integration—architecture, behavioral design, and placemaking—generates solutions that reimagine civic life.
Technical soundness is shown through passive design strategies: open-air corridors, deep overhangs, and pocket gardens ensure thermal comfort and reduce energy demand. The digital-ready layout includes service lanes and e-commerce logistics, enhancing efficiency.
