Rongjin Gorgeous Time Park --Renovation of the Former Official Dormitories of Taihoku Prison

The former official building was the wooden staff dormitory of the Taipei prison during the Japanese colonial era. After WWII, although the Taipei Prison was relocated, it continued to be used as a dormitory. In 2017, the Department of Cultural Affairs of the Taipei City Government started the restoration of 6 Japanese-style wooden dormitories and 1 brick bathhouse building in the district, which was completed in 2021.

Before we took over, the restored dormitory building had been completed but could not meet the space reuse needs. In addition, there are 11 protected trees that need to be sorted out, so in 2021, the project of the renovation of historical buildings has been launched.

In order to consider the integration of the historical context and the future role of the public place in the Jinhua Street block, this planning is based on three axes, the historical axis, the life axis, and the urban axis. It sorts out the historical buildings, open spaces, and circulation and elevations, and connects the architectural complex and commercial activities. The park provides citizens with the needs of living, resting and walking in the historical space. The historical exhibition space provides the possibility of a nuanced dialogue between new and old.
