The National Museum of History, Taipei's most emblematic cultural venue, embarked on a comprehensive renovation project, commencing with the removal of 6,753 old roof tiles. After six years of meticulous restoration efforts, the museum is set to reopen by the end of 2023. The project team has devoted substantial effort to rigorous historical research regarding the architectural heritage. For commemorative gifts, the design integrates repurposed roof tiles. Each removed tile encapsulates Taipei's invaluable history. The design preserves the artistic "embossed" craftsmanship found on the traditional blue-glazed roof tiles. Waterjet cutting and CNC etching techniques are employed to create decorative ornaments, continuing the tiles' original function of providing shelter from wind and rain while also serving as auspicious adornments. This transformation turns retired artifacts into memorabilia that carry architectural memories. These memories are encapsulated within clear organic glass, symbolizing continuity and fusion. The gifts are presented to the colleagues who have contributed to the National Museum of History, in anticipation of the museum's renewed glory.
