The Yancheng First Public Retail Market was one of the busiest markets in Kaohsiung's history. It has been operational for over a century, undergoing renovations at various times. The precious wooden roof structure, which was once concealed, deprived the daylight, leaving us a damp and dim traditional market. Therefore, from the perspective of overall environmental improvement, we have introduced skylights and ventilation to address the issues of darkness and humidity. We have creatively designed artistic lighting fixtures using reclaimed wood from the roof trusses, re-illuminating the traditional wooden beams. The tangled electrical wires have always been an unresolved environmental problem. Hence, the newly designed wall-mounted light troughs are capable of accommodating the excessive electrical wires on the facade of the market, while also illuminating the market entrance. We deliberately preserved empty spaces amidst the crowded stalls of the traditional market, furnished with activity furniture. These areas serve as places for residents to interact on a daily basis and can also host various community events, ensuring the market's sustainable operation. We have redesigned the market's signage and wayfinding system to serve as a bridge of communication between the market and visitors, while the new logo and signs convey a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity.
